Nestled on the banks of the Rapti in east Uttar Pradesh lies Gorakhpur. It is here that the Indian government has proposed the setting up of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY). The project is envisaged as a centre of education for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and intends to focus on providing the highest quality of patient-care services and medical education, apart from encouraging advancements in medical research. The 112-acre site is conceptualized as a self-sustained integrated campus with dedicated zones for healthcare, institutional and residential components. The project includes a 750-bed multi– and super-speciality hospital, a medical and nursing college, auditorium, hostels, residential facilities for staff and faculty, and other ancillary requirements along with planned space for future developments.
