A far cry from the box typology design usually associated with hospitals, the United Hospital in Dhaka sports a juxtaposition of different forms and levels, adding up to a landmark building. Completed in 2006, this healthcare facility makes a lasting impression on patients and their families. A magnificent pergola embodies the entrance to the hospital and the overall aesthetic is a refreshing departure from the traditional buildings in the city. This 450-bed super-speciality hospital with state-of-the-art diagnostic and operating facilities, consists of two square blocks set around an atrium over a built-up area of 4,50,000 sq. ft. The two wings are connected by a reception that stretches from one block to the other, creating a dramatic entrance and a spacious waiting area for patients’ families. The winged form equally distributes the length-width ratio of the interiors such that the different examination and treatment areas are easily accessible. A careful segregation of consultation spaces from treatment rooms on the ground floor regulates ease of movement.
