The Maritime Training Institute provides not only knowledge-based training but also practical competence in the field of marine engineering. It is located in Powai, one of Mumbai’s most eco-sensitive regions, which is characterized by an undulating landscape impregnated by streams and lakes. The design vision for the project sought to encourage ecosensitive urban development and conserve the natural systems of Powai’s geography. Placed adjacent to Powai Lake, the site has a soft and hydrated soil profile that possesses little bearing capacity. The height of the buildings was kept low, ensuring shallow foundations that did not dig too deep into the malleable ground and did not disturb the hydrological system, which exists below the ground level. The low height also helped in merging the built form with the openness of the site by respecting the horizontality of the ground. In order to further emphasize the appearance of the buildings, emerging in layers parallel to the ground, the entire façade was rendered in bold stone finish, with a striped pattern that embodies the surrounding environment’s geographical aesthetics.
